About the tool

ExifView decodes metadata exactly as stored in the file. That has limits worth knowing:

• A file can lie. Metadata is plain data — it can be edited, forged or left behind by an earlier camera or editor. A missing GPS tag proves a file is clean of metadata, not where it was taken; a present one proves a tag exists, not that it’s true.
• The parser is best-effort. EXIF dialects vary by manufacturer; MakerNote blocks are vendor-proprietary and are reported by size, not decoded. Malformed or unusual files may show partial results.
• Stripping is verified, not certified. The clean-copy feature re-encodes the image and re-scans the output for metadata blocks. For JPEG this involves one lossy re-encode. It removes metadata in the file — it cannot erase copies already shared or metadata a platform kept server-side.
